Using Lifestyle Engineering to Buy Healthier Food

Most people think that building better choices, creating healthy habits or changing your actions is all about willpower or motivation. But from all my years of helping folks organize their spaces and their bodies, AND all my years of studying yoga, human mind and anatomy, I believe that the number one driver of behavior change (or at least the easiest to access) is our physical world.

Our environment has an incredible ability to shape our actions and choices. Nowhere is this more true than with food. What we eat on a daily basis is often a result of what we see.  If you are anything like me, you will buy or eat whatever is closer to you, whether it’s wholesome food or not.  So to eat healthy food a good reverse-engineering is to surround yourself or hang out with healthy food.

When I go to my local grocery store (which I must say it’s a gigantic emporium of Portuguese & South American food), I walk around the outer periphery of the market.  This is true to every supermarket around the world I have ever been, the outer periphery is where the healthy food usually lives: fruits, vegetables, eggs, nuts, lean meats.  Basically all items that are usually not processed and healthier for you.  So shopping on the outer periphery is what I am “choosing” to eat, because it is what I see.

Architecture determines where things go, since electric outlets for massive refrigeration are usually on a wall and so are the building´s drains.  That means that the middle aisles are where all of the caned,  boxed and adulterated stuff is placed -they, more likely don´t need refrigeration.  If you don’t want to eat or you want to cut back in processed-food consumption, don’t go down those middle aisles and you won’t buy those foods. If you don’t buy those foods, they won’t end up around for you to eat. Try this the next time you go to the store and do your best to not make exceptions.  When I do this not only I spend way less money in my groceries, but I find myself cooking and eating healthier = feeling great in my body and mind.

Sure, there will be the occasional time that you’ll need to go down an aisle to pick up your oils, spices or honey but that will be rare and not often. It could be weeks before I go into those middle aisles ( but when I do I always pick more than what I intended to buy, which confirms that knowing of something isn’t as effective as doing something- smile )

The perfect gift is in your intention

Looking for last-minute holiday gifts can be stressful when we add all the last-minute activities that we try to squeeze out of the end of the year. When in a stressful situation I always ask the intention, and we can all agree that the objective of a holiday gift is to offer to the people we love and like something that will enrich their lives–things they will appreciate, use and enjoy.  If you are purchasing gifts, unless you have been told what the gift receiver wants, chances are you won’t know how the gift is received and/or if the gift will fulfill its intention.

So what do we do? How do we strengthen social bonds without forking over a ton of money? How do we avoid putting our loved ones in positions where they feel like they must pretend to like something in order to maintain a relationship? Here are a few ideas:

  • Give experiences. People are far more likely to be satisfied with an experience than an object. Treat them to a play, take them out to dinner or cook dinner for them, go to a yoga class with them…whatever. Keep the focus on doing and experiencing, not having and accumulating. If you need ideas, I love a website I found this season, it's called Unstuff and it offers great ideas for stuff-free gift giving.

  • Give a gift certificate or money. It might lack the romance, but these gifts are sure to get used. I usually add a note to the card telling the receiver anecdotes or of gifts ideas I thought they may enjoy.

  • Give thoughtfully. Gift giving is an art. It often takes time, consideration and some knowledge of the gift receiver’s life. If we don’t have those things, we might want to give something with more universal appeal. If we do have those things, choose something carefully…and feel free to throw in a gift receipt and make sure you tell them that they can return. Remember its not your gift once given.

Alive by Raw Chocolate

I recently met this beautiful girl, Christine McSpedon.  She is a Holistic Health Counselor from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.  I know; I asked the same question.  She specializes in working with those who are transitioning into including more plant-based foods into their lifestyle and people who just want to eat what is right for them.  Oh, I so need a health coach.  To learn more about Christine and for a free health history visit her website at www.Christinemcspedon.com. I met Christine while she was looking for the perfect gift packaging for chocolate truffles.  I know; I asked her the same question.  She makes the truffles herself.  She told me that she began making raw vegan chocolate truffles to healthfully satisfy the sweet tooth of many of her clients.  And then, one night at a networking party Christine’s truffles took on a life of their own . To her surprise people wanted to buy her truffles and NutsBalls Truffles was born. In between helping her wonderful clients achieve balance and wellness and rolling out boxes of chocolate goodness, Christine also hosts workshops on green smoothies and healthy cooking.  She is my nutritional heroine.

I was able to extract from Christine the basic recipe for raw chocolate truffles.  This recipe can be the solution to the infamous dessert Death by Chocolate, which leaves you, well, dead.  These babies are raw, vegan, organic, and dairy & gluten free!  Before you read the recipe, here are some kewl fact about raw cacao that Christine shared with me:

It Keeps you Young! Cacao contains the highest amount of antioxidants than any other food (including red wine!)

It’s Mineral Rich! Cacao is a high source of Magnesium, Iron, Chromium,  Manganese & Zinc!

Enhances Mood & Concentration Cacao contains: •    Phenylethylamine - a chemical group naturally produced by our bodies when we fall in love. •    Anandamide -an endorphin also known as the “Bliss Chemical”. •    Trytophan -an essential amino acid that produces serotonin

This is what you need

A food processor (or a Molcajete!) ¼ cup organic raw cacao powder 6 dried organic apricots ½ cup soaked raw organic almonds 2tsp warmed (so its liquid) organic coconut oil 2 tsp organic raw organic agave 1tsp warmed organic raw coconut butter ½ vanilla bean Pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt

This is what you do In a mini food processor  blend cacao, vanilla bean, coconut oil. Add apricots and agave. Remove and put to the side. Process almonds until very fine. Using a medium processor /batches in mini or simply mixing with hands combine ingredients and mix adding coconut butter and salt. Roll into teaspoon size balls.

For different flavors try adding nutmeg & cinnamon (pumpkin spice), lemon zest, almond extract, coconut flakes. Roll in nuts, cacao powder or dip in chocolate.

I know; I asked her the same question.  If you just want to try these delicious Nuts Balls Truffles, you can contact Christine for ordering information and current flavors nutsballstruffles@hotmail.co.uk or you can even call her 914.319.54.14
